President & Chief Executive+Technology Officer

Mason is a deep tech executive and co-founder of Ro (Research Online), currently leading engineering and infrastructure for large-scale physiological research online. His eclectic and deep background combines interpretable machine learning, AI engineering, technology, data science, cognitive science, biochemistry, physiology, medicine, medical imaging, and business to lead research innovations. Mason serves as a college professor in computer science, and is the author of the textbook "Pearls and Perils of Machine Learning", utilized in multiple academic courses. Mason holds dual MSc degrees in neuroscience from Western University and biomedical engineering from McMaster University, with ML certification from the University of Oxford.

Dr. Baraa Al-Khazraji

Chief Science Officer

Dr. Baraa K. Al-Khazraji is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology, Faculty of Science, and School of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, McMaster University. Baraa received her Doctorate of Medical Biophysics in the microvascular control from Western University, and her postdoctoral training in Kinesiology in the area of integrative cardiovascular and cerebrovascular control. Baraa leads a research lab focusing on local and systemic hemodynamics, clinical populations and vascular-related comorbidities, and exercise physiology. The growing technical areas of interest in the lab include automating medical image analysis, advanced statistical approaches (e.g., machine learning), and application of AI methods to vascular research. Baraa teaches upper level courses in Kinesiology focused on integrative cardiovascular physiology, cardiopathophysiology, and introductory hemodynamic data analysis.

  • Is Ro secure?

    Research Online (Ro) is highly secure. It is built using PHIPPA compliant containers and leverages edge computing to enable local data processing, anonymization, offline operation, and a distributed architecture, minimizing data interception and unauthorized access for enhanced security.

  • Raw data is never stored, but rather locally analyzed, anonymized and processed on edge devices. Researchers are only given the AI-derived variables they need to conduct their research.

  • Individuals of all ages, ranging from those in utero and neonates to octogenarians and centenarians, have the opportunity to participate regardless of their location, whether on Earth, in low Earth orbit, or even in future missions to Mars. The only requirement is that you have a device with a camera and microphone, along with a stable internet connection to participate.

  • We focus on novel (i.e., beyond typical heart rate measures) acquisition of signals related to the heart and brain that can serve as diagnostic and prognostic non-contact markers of health and disease

  • While we build up our experimental databases in every domain, we will funnnel participants in through other crowd sourcing platform to meet the needs of our researchers. Moreover, reserachers/clinicians can also recruit their own participants and have them use Ro.
